Restaurant Review
Located on the waterfront in Lima's Barranco district, Cala is one of the city's most iconic restaurants, celebrated as much for its spectacular ocean views as for its contemporary Peruvian cuisine. Perched directly above the Pacific Ocean along the Costa Verde, the restaurant offers a unique setting where diners can enjoy the sound of crashing waves and some of Lima's most memorable sunsets.
Founded in 2006, Cala has become a Lima institution, blending traditional Peruvian flavours with modern culinary techniques. The menu focuses heavily on fresh seafood, ceviche, and coastal cuisine while incorporating contemporary and fusion influences that reflect Peru's diverse gastronomic heritage.
Unlike many of Lima's other internationally acclaimed tasting-menu restaurants, Cala offers a more relaxed yet sophisticated dining experience, making it popular with both visitors and locals. While the food is highly regarded, the restaurant's greatest asset is arguably its location, with floor-to-ceiling views of the Pacific providing a dramatic backdrop for lunch, dinner, or sunset drinks.
The waiting staff were highly professional, competent, and seemingly moved through the restaurant on roller skates, attending to tables with remarkable speed and efficiency. Service was attentive throughout the meal, with dishes arriving promptly and staff always appearing available when needed.
Visiting during the day made it difficult to fully appreciate the atmosphere, although the stunning waterfront location suggested that the restaurant would truly come into its own in the evening, particularly at sunset when the Pacific Ocean provides a dramatic backdrop.
Unfortunately, the food was somewhat underwhelming. I selected an entrée and a main course, and while both dishes were well presented, the flavours did not always seem to complement the ingredients. The combinations felt slightly disjointed, leaving my palate a little confused rather than impressed. In addition, both dishes were noticeably over-seasoned. The risotto, in particular, was excessively salty, which I suspect may have been the result of an overly concentrated stock. The seasoning overwhelmed some of the more subtle flavours and detracted from what was otherwise a technically competent dish.
While Cala's spectacular location and efficient service make it a worthwhile destination, the food on this occasion did not quite live up to the high expectations created by its reputation and setting.
